Compiling wspr & wsjt etc. on (x/k/l/)ubuntu

See here, excellent guide. This is on a i386 env based on that guide. Tested on Ubuntu 12.04.

Warning, this checks out trunk code so it might not work some days. Check out the development mailing lists / raise a bug / go have a cuppa and try a couple of days later.

but unfortunately it ignores the prefix for Python stuff. In the end I gave up on the prefix etc. and compiled it on the Eee 701 directly, wasting space on the packages. The original idea was to compile it on a 32-bit "development" VM and then copy stuff around. Anyhooow... The going is very slow on Eee, esp. with the fldigi running and decoding bpsk31 14.070 in the background. A lot of warnings are generated during the build.

I haven't compiled the rest. Maybe they will work.

Anyway, I have had problems running it off the installed path, also wsjt's startup script has some logic problems.

Simply run python wsjt.py or python wspr.py from the source directory and it all works fine!

Almanlarda yine mi sorun çıkmış, tamam biraz hakkında konuşalım, ne yapabiliriz filan feşmekan, oki bu akşam bir bakarım serverlerine sorun çıkartıyor mu, 10'da mı duruyorlardı? Ha tamam, 9'da, saat farkı da var. Oki hadi bay! Çat küt araba kapısı. Ulan saate bak, 7 olcak neredeyse, direk eve. Çok acıktım. Telsizde bir şey duluyor mu bakalım tepeden aşağı inerken. 145.7375'te bir şey var ama pek anlaşılmıyor, çok fade in out var.... Neyse eve geldik zaten. Çat küt kapı. Yaa, evvelki hafta Freecycle'daki adamdan aldığım turntable hala arabanın arkasında yahu, dur onu da yüklenelim, spikerler kalsın şimdi, hepsini birden taşıyamam.

Off nasıl acıktım yaa, hemen hafta sonu dondurduğum yemeklerden birisini mikrodalgaya atalım ama önce laptopu açalım hazırlansın. Lay lay lom, bir podcast mı dinlesem o arada, bir BBC komedisi arşivlerden iyi gider. Yemeği de ısıttık yiyelim, bir yandan birikmiş Private Eye sayılarının birisini okuyayım. Zaten Bram Stoker yazısı yazmam gerekiyor, ona öncelik verelim ama önce bi Reader'i temizleyelim. Ulan ofisten çıkıp buraya gelene kadar 165 yeni post gelmiş. Neyse, çoğunluğu The Grauniad'ın haberleri. Mark all as Read. Oki. Wired, ditto, uğraşamam. Dur bakalım, Arm Control Wonk'dan yeni yazı var, bu okunmalı. Oha be çüş. Neyse, karikatürlere de hızlıca bir bakalım, 30 küsür birikmiş... Io9 yazılarını sonra okuruz. Bu gün yine daraltıcı şeylerle dolu, biraz Not Always Right bakıp keyfimizi yerimize getirelim. Başka ne vardı, hızlıca Scalzi ne demiş bakalım... Oha saate bak, 9:30, of yaaa nereye gitti bu zaman. Kafa kalmadı, Stoker'i az sonra ele alırım. TODO listesine bakalım. HF anten kablosunu test et, oki. çok zaman almaz, buna hemen bakalım. Ayrıcana bu gün kimleri duymuş acaba FT-847, hemen PSK Reporter'e bakalım. Vay vay vay, hayvan herif Küba'dan iki kişi duymuşuz bu gun. Yarın WSPR çalıştırayım bar. Anten tamam gibi, madem bunlara bakıyoruz şu magmount'un kopmuş kablosunu lehimleyeyim. Saat kaç, oha 2 olmuş. En iyisi lensleri çıkarıp yatayım yatağımda.. Yarın sabah erken kalkıp Stoker yazısına bakarım.

Aaaaa! Alarmı kapatmışım, oha saat 8 olacak, hemen bir duş, arkasından ofise. Çatküt kapı vınnn... Günaydıın... Hassiktir, pass'ı evde unutmuşuz, yaa Michelle, bi zahmet beni içeri alır mısın? Alooo! Solution:
======
When you start to install with ./runInstaller, run in another terminal window (as root)
ls $ORACLE_HOME/sysman/lib/ins_emagent.mk
At first this will produce an error, as the installer wont have created this file yet.
Once the file exists, do:
vi $ORACLE_HOME/sysman/lib/ins_emagent.mk
Search for the line
$(MK_EMAGENT_NMECTL)
Change it to:
$(MK_EMAGENT_NMECTL) -lnnz11

What's more, insanely for some reason we could link Oracle libraries with the GCC 4.6 on 10.2.0.2 but not on 10.2.0.3. gcc is a symlink to /usr/bin/gcc4.6 by default.

apt-get install gcc-4.4
cd /usr/bin
rm gcc
ln -s gcc-4.4 gcc
once it's all linked w/o errors
rm gcc
ln -s gcc-4.6 gcc

and then retry and retry and retry. Insane!

Until Ubuntu gets Oracle certified, it's server won't be taken seriously. On the other hand, Oracle hasn't certified OEL6 with Oracle 11gR2 so I'm not taking Oracle seriously either.

VMWare ESX Killing trick


Nice way

  • locate the VM:
  vmware-cmd -l
  • Shutdown the VM:
   vmware-cmd /vmfs/volumes///.vmx stop
  • Just turn the power off:
   vmware-cmd /vmfs/volumes///.vmx stop hard

Nasty way

   ps auxfww|grep 
  kill -9 

Skype, qjackctl and pulse notes

Tested on Dell Latitute and Asus Eee.

Also should work fine with any recording device (including on-board / webcam mikes), mixer is used to provide better mikes and multiple people recording).

Plug the UCA-202 into the laptop.

Setup

Add the following to .asoundrc:

Start qjackctl and add the following to the execute script after startup bit:

Verify /proc/asound/cards and set the hardware to the correct one.

Then start up the jack daemon, open the connections, disconnect all.

Start up a 4-track Timemachine: timemachine -c 4

Connections
  • Connect the PulseAudio Jack Sink left & right to Timemachine channels 1 & 2.
  • Connect System-capture 1 & 2 to Timemachine channels 3&4.
  • Connect System-capture 1 & 2 to Pulseaudio Jack Source channels left and right (so that Skype people can hear you talking via the mike).
  • To monitor yourself, connect System-capture 1&2 to System playback 1 &2 (Folio Notebook master mix/tape button must be depressed to achieve this - which causes a lot of 50Hz hum), other mixer to be tested.
Power up the mixer, send the mike 1 to left channel, mike 2 to right channel. Test both channels to see if you are recording into Timemachine. 

Start Pavucontrol and mute all devices apart from the USB one. 
Set Pavucontrol Recording: Skype : Input from: Jack Source (PulseAudio Jack Source).

Set up a Skype test call and check if you can hear it via the mixer headphones and the mixer mike is played back to you. If you are using a second PC to test in the same room, Skype's echo cancellation makes it very tricky. Also make sure that the pavucontrol input volume is set to 100% at least to start with.

I've been reading the old entries here. I haven't done much lately. Today I tidied up the room. That's it. I mean, seriously. I plugged the new antennas in and listened to 20 and 40m but didn't transmit again. Last entry in the logbook is now years old. I've become a real lurker SWL. Some kind gentleman from Ofcom extended my reciprocal licence until 2016 so I don't have to worry about it for an other couple of years.

I spent some cash on vertical antennas for 20 and 6 meters and got a short vertical for 80m to 70cm and guess what, the stupid wire antenna around the room beats the lot for reception. I was hoping for something a bit better than that.

I haven't been writing, composing nor playing anything lately. I haven't taken the scope out for a year nor I have used the small scope nor binos for a coupe of months now. I haven't touched the camera for weeks until today (shot a couple of sun+cloud pictures through a dirty window).

I haven't found a new band to listen for a while and last time I went to a concert was Hawkwind in Cambridge and that was some damn time ago.

I've been reading a bit, at least I can say I've done that.

Tomorrow, a new day, hopefully.

Ubuntu Keyserver not accessible

This usually happens because the keyserver port is blocked by a corporate firewall. You can use an other machine to fetch the keys and load them.

TFTP + DHCP Server setup for net-installing Ubuntu

Enable network booting from BIOS and move it above the rest.

Install Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS or better on a VM (VMWare or VirtualBox works).

sudo apt-get install tftpd-hpa dhcp3-server openbsd-inetd tftp-hpa

Backup and replace /etc/dhcpd3/dhcpd.conf with the file below the divider.

Download the correct netboot package:

etc.

mkdir -p /tftpboot/lucid-64bit
cd /tftpboot/lucid-64bit ; tar -zxf ~/netboot.tar.gz

do the same for the 32 bit packages if you have any older machines.

Boot the PC once over the network. It won't. Note down the IP address.

Edit /etc/dhcpd3/dhcpd.conf and change the following for your env:
 hardware ethernet 00:1E:8C:5C:7D:42;
 fixed-address 192.168.1.100;
 next-server 192.168.1.64;
 filename "lucid-64bit/pxelinux.0";
 option routers 192.168.1.254;
 option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.254;

replacing the hardware ethernet with the PC's MAC, modify fixed-address to a value you would like to hand out to the machine, next-server, option routers and domain-name servers should point to the existing ADSL router etc.

Restart the dhcpd daemon. Make sure inetd is running, if not invoke the daemon.

This step is very critical: PLUG THE FRIGGIN' CABLE TO THE EEE...

Reboot. Enjoy.
Then it's a matter of spending a couple of hours while it downloads everything over the net and installs.
